Summary:
There are many different religious in Taiwan. It is because freedom of religion is a constitutional right of every citizen. Generally speaking, it includes folk religion, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Yi Guan Dao, Islam and Christianity etc. They have different history, unlike credenda.
Fundamentally of Confucianism is a moral philosophy. It is named after Confucius. Most of people don’t consider Confucianism as a religion. It considered a philosophy. And Confucius’s birthday usually has elaborate ceremonies at Confucian Temples. His birthday also regarded a Teacher’s Day. It is because his thought is important in Taiwan’s educational system.
Folk religion has a broad pantheon of gods and goddesses. It relations between deities and people and amongst the deitied themselves are of paramount importance. And the commonest deities in folk religion are the Earth God, the local protector, and Ma Zu etc.
Taoism like Confucianism , it developed from a philosophic system. Taoists place great emphasis on individual freedom, human spontaneity, harmony with nature, and mystical experiences etc. Taoist believes good moral conduct can provide offerings to various deities, and conduct religious ceremonies to ensure a smooth and harmonious life.
Since, a form of Buddhism has become increasingly popular in Taiwan. It was first introduced in to Taiwan in the late 16th century. In recent years, Buddhism has placed greater emphasis on education and charity work, and many Buddhist colleges and hospitals have been established.
Yi Guan Dao is the third most popular religious in Taiwan. It founded in the 17th century. Yi Guan Dao usually holds its services at family shrines to cultivate personal character and regulate family relations.
Christianity is brought to Taiwan in 1624. The largest sect in the Christianity is the Presbyterian. And until 2001, there are 21 Christian denominations registered with the MOI. Popular independent churches the True Jesus Church, Seventh-day Adventists, Mandarin Church, Ling Leung Tang, and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint etc.Although there are different religious in Taiwan, religion is freedom. We can choice our belief. Religion can give us comfort when we disappointed, it may let us calm when we down. Today, old and new deities alike share the Taiwanese people;s loyalties, with various religions peacefully coexisting side-be-side.
